The World Taekwondo Hanmadang is a chance and a venue for the global taekwondo family to gather in Korea, the homeland of taekwondo.
Taekwondo is being carried out as part of efforts to develop into a culture and tourism industry beyond the concept of simple sports, while cultural and tourism products that enjoy festivals at the venue of the World Taekwondo Hanmadang and visit Kukkiwon, the origin of taekwondo, are among the most favored tour programs by overseas taekwondo practitioners and play a role in the K-pop.
Taekwondo has become a popular sport in 209 countries around the world, and more than 5 million people, especially in China, are known to enjoy it.
Given the participation of about 3,300 athletes from 62 countries at the World Taekwondo Hanmadang in Jeju last year, the Pyeongchang World Taekwondo Hanmadang, tentatively scheduled for late July or early August, is expected to attract more than 10,000 tourists, including participants, their families and event organizers.
After several rounds of continuous consultations with Dong-sup Lee of the Bareunmirae Party, Dong-yeol Yeom, Gangwon Province Governor Moon-soon Choi and Pyeongchang County Governor Wang-ki Han, who are committed to developing taekwondo, the bid has paid off.
Active cooperation and support between Governor Choi and a county head played a major role in the successful bid of the competition, and the excellent conditions of Yongpyeong Dome Stadium were also praised.
Since taekwondo was designated as the national martial art of Korea in March last year, the first competition will be held in PyeongChang, which is significant.
2019 국기원, 세계태권도한마당(이하 한마당) 개최지는 우리나라를 대표하는 평화의 도시 평창군으로 확정됐다.
국기원은 한마당을 오는 7월 26일(금)부터 30일(화)까지 닷새간 강원도 평창군에 소재한 ‘용평돔’에서 개최하기로 했다.
국기원은 지난해부터 한마당 개최지 관련 절차를 진행했고, 유치 후보지 실사, 선정위원회 등을 통해 올해 한마당 개최지로 평창군을 최종 선정했다.
평창군(강원도)은 8억 원, 국기원은 3억 원 등 예산을 각각 지원하고, 한마당의 성공 개최를 위해 적극 협력하기로 했다.
국기원이 매년 개최하는 한마당은 각종 위력격파, 시범, 품새, 태권체조 등 태권도가 지닌 다양한 가치를 추구하는 지구촌 태권도 가족들의 최대 축제로 인식되고 있다.
올해 한마당은 총 12개 종목 59개 부문(개인전 8개 종목 46개 부문, 단체전 4개 종목 13개 부문)에서 경연이 치러질 예정이다.
지난해 일정과 장소, 참가자 미비 등의 이유로 제외시켰던 멀리뛰어격파(기록경연) 종목과 주먹격파(위력격파) 종목 여자 부문을 부활시켰다.
속도격파(기록경연) 종목의 경우 격파기술을 종전의 손날치기가 아닌 주먹지르기로 변경, 적용하기로 했다.
국기원은 오는 5월 13일(월)부터 온라인(홈페이지)을 통해 한마당 참가 접수를 시작할 계획이다.
또한 지난해 12월 한마당 경연 규정‧규칙의 전부개정이 이뤄짐에 따라 설명회를 개최할 방침이다.
