On January 12~13. 2020, Korea Taekwondo Association (President Changshin Choi, hereinafter KTA) held a demonstration, ‘KTA Power Taekwondo Premium League (hereinafter Premium League) at Fiber Center Event Hall, Samseong-dong to breaks away from the existing match with electronic protective gear and promote match focusing on power.

Premium League was held to break away from boring match such as kicks in existing Olympics and to change into match focusing on power.

Also, the match focused on restoring the value as a martial art by entering the stadium in bare foot or indoor shoes instead of sticking to the old customs of wearing outdoor shoes.

In regard to main characteristics of Premium League match, both players are given the same damage point amount and the player who takes off the damage point wins the match.

For body scoring, semi-automatic electronic protective gear is used. When a player is damaged over certain amount with a Taekwondo skill approved by the assistant referee, the player’s damage point is consumed. For face scoring, point is given based on high-intensity hit and low-intensity hit.   

When a player takes undesirable action, the player is given 10 seconds of penalty. During the penalty time, the player gets twice the damage from the other player. 

Meanwhile, the event was held under the support from Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The current WT rule-based matches are ridiculed both by Taekwondo-related people and even general public. There was a chance to meet Taekwondo-related person at the stadium and he said “WT needs to observe this match with keen insight. However, no one from WT showed up in today’s match and I am really worried about this”. He pointed out WT’s negligence while standing in the institutional center of Taekwondo matches.

Some also pointed out that WT needs to be aware that such attempt was made under the support from government authorities rather than people actually involved in Taekwondo.

Indeed, Yeonhwan Park, the president of US Taekwondo Leader's union, living in New York talked about how South Korea needs to make true Taekwondo match as the birthplace of Taekwondo. Park suggested rules similar to Premium League and he suggested on preparing the demonstration contest by delivering the fund(US$ 10,000) from people related to Taekwondo in New York.

대한민국태권도협회(회장 최창신, 이하 KTA)가 기존의 전자호구에 터치 개념의 겨루기 방식에서 벗어나 위력중심의 겨루기를 위한‘KTA Power 태권도 프리미엄 리그(이하 프리미엄 리그)’시연회가 1월 12~13일서울 삼성동 섬유센터 이벤트 홀에서 열렸다.

프리미엄 리그는 위력중심의 경기로 탈바꿈하여 기존 올림픽 방식의 겨루기 방식에서 주는 변칙 발차기 등의 재미없는 경기 방식에서 벗어나고자 시도됐다.
또한 경기장에 실외화를 신고 들어가는 폐습을 타파하고 맨발이나 실내화를 신고 들어가는 등 무도성 회복에도 전념했다.
 
프리미엄 리그 경기 방식의 주요 특징으로 승패 결정은 동등하게 부여된 충격량을 먼저 소모시키는 선수가 승리한다.
 
몸통 득점은 반자동 전자호구를 활용하여 부심이 인정한 태권도 기술로 일정 수치 이상의 충격치가 가해지면 상대방의 충격량이 소모는 방식으로 진행한다. 얼굴득점은 고강도 타격과 저강도 타격으로 구분하여 점수가 부여된다.
 
바람직하지 않은 행위로 벌칙을 받은 선수는 10초의 페널티 시간을 받으며 이 시간동안 상대로부터 받는 충격치는 2배가 된다.

한편 이번 대회는 문화체육관광부의 지원으로 성사됐다.

현재 WT룰 속에서 치루어지는 경기는 태권도인들 뿐 아니라 일반 대중에게도 조롱(?)속에 경기였다. 경기장에서 만난 한 태권도인은”WT는 혜안을 갖고 이런 경기를 지켜봐야 되는데 어느 누구도 경기장에 모습이 보이지 않아 큰 걱정이다”며 현재 태권도 경기의 제도적 중심에 있는 WT의 무관심을 지적했다.

사실 이런 시도가 태권도인 들 스스로가 진행하지 못하고 정부 당국의 지원으로 진행된 것은 각성해야 할 것이란 지적도 나오고 있다.
오죽했으면 뉴욕거주 박연환 US Taekwondo Leader's union 회장은 태권도 모국에서부터 경기다운 경기를 만들어 보라며 이번 대회와 비슷한 룰까지 제시하며 뉴욕지구 태권도인들의 경기 태권도 발전기금(10,000불)을 본지에 전달하려니 시연 대회를 준비해 보라는 안타까운 사연도 있었다.
