The world Taekwondo hero for the month has been selected. The Taekwondo hero of the month is G.M Dai Won Moon, the godfather of Mexican Taekwondo.  

Taekwondo hero of the month is “Project for enhancing the honor of Taekwondoin organized by WATC and jointly sponsored by Oh NO KYUN Taekwondo TV, World Taekwondo United News, and International Martial Arts Olympiad.”

 
The great instructor G.M Moon emphasizes that “Taekwondo is the biggest present granted to the Korean people since Dangun. Now, Taekwondo doesn’t belong to only Korea. It belongs to the world.”   

For the last 44 years, G.M Moon taught 300,000 students and over 40,000 students have Dan. G.M Moon also runs 450 Taekwondo schools all over Mexico.

G.M Moon contributed on development of Taekwondo throughout his life and we praise G.M Moon as “Taekwondo Hero” under the name for “Of Taekwondoin, By Taekwondoin, and For Taekwondo.”

 
G.M Moon is a proud Korean who is called as “Legend of Taekwondo”, “President of Mexican Taekwondo”, and “Grand Maestro” in Mexico.  

G.M Moon who was born in Hongsung, Chungnam, Korea first learned Taekwondo when he was a student at Daejeon Middle School. In 1962, he was a sophomore for Department of Political Science and Diplomacy of Kyunghee University and he went to the United States to study abroad. When he entered the Department of Architecture at Texas State University, he had Taekwondo 2-dan. Next year, he happened to participate in the martial arts contest held in Oklahoma and he won the contest.

“At that time, no one knew Taekwondo and Karate spread by Japanese was dominant. In the “Sparring” without protective gears, G.M Moon won the contest 3 years in a row regardless of the weight class.” It is also said that “When G.M Moon threw down a huge figure over 2 meters and broke thick bricks with hand blade, everyone got astonished.” That was when he spread Taekwondo in the United States in the early stage. 
 
It is said that “G.M Moon got selected as a cover model for martial arts magazine and he got invitations from martial arts contests around the states.” Then, he got invited to Mexican martial arts contest like a destiny.  
 
After visiting Mexico in 1968, G.M Moon settled down in Mexico as the official Taekwondo instructor in the next year. To spread “Taekwondo” to Mexicans who thought of Taekwondo as “Korean Karate”, Moon opened a Taekwondo school named “Mudeokgwan”. He removed the Japanese flag and portrait of legendary karate master, Mabuni, on the walls and put up the national flag of Korea.   

G.M Moon said “At first, most of the students were club members who changed from Karate to Taekwondo. While they knew about Karate which was spread since 1959, they were unfamiliar with Taekwondo. Then, my students won Mexican martial contests from 1969 to 1975 and Taekwondo passed over Karate.” 

As Mexico ranked the 3rd place in the 1st and 2nd World Taekwondo Championship (1973, 1975) Taekwondo got famous in Mexico.

With such popularity, G.M Moon founded “Mexican Taekwondo Association” in 1976.

“G.M Moon Dai-won National Taekwondo Championship” also encouraged Taekwondo in Mexico. Also, G.M Moon visited and taught Taekwondo at boarding schools ran by a Korean nun and boarding school where homeless Mexican girls stay for 2~3 years for vocational training.  

As he infused the spirit of Taekwondo to hot tempered Mexicans, his students became exemplary Mexicans. He got medal and citation award from Mexican government for such contributions. The Korean government also invited him for reward.   

G.M Moon is a proud Taekwondo instructor who tried to change the life of Mexicans by the Taekwondo spirit! 

G.M Moon firmly believes that winner of life is not the one who wins a gold medal in competition. Instead, it’s the one who wins over oneself at every moment of life.  

G.M Moon changed numerous Mexicans by teaching the Taekwondo spirit as martial art and G.M Moon is the exemplary Taekwondoin among the Taekwondoins around the world. Therefore, we select G.M Moon as “Taekwondo Hero” of April.

세계 태권도 영웅을 선정 하였습니다. 이달의 태권도 영웅은 멕시코 태권도 대부 문대원 대사범님 이십니다.

태권도 영웅 선정은 “태권도 문화원에서 주관하고 오노균태권도TV, 세계태권도 연합신문, 국제무예올림피아드가 공동후원하여 선정하는 태권도인의 명예선양 사업”입니다.

 "태권도는 단군 이래 한민족에게 주어진 가장 큰 선물로 이제 태권도는 한국만의 것이 아니라 세계의 것입니다."라고 강조 하는 문대원 대사범님!

문사범님께서 지난 44년 동안 30만 명의 제자를 배출했고, 이 가운데 유단자가 4만여 명이 넘습니다. 멕시코 전역에서 450개의 도장을 직접 운영하고 있습니다.

우리들은 평생을 태권도 발전에 공헌하신 문대원 대사범님을 “태권도인의, 태권도인에 의한, 태권도인을 위한,” 이름으로 “태권도영웅”으로 찬양 합니다.

문 사범님은 멕시코에서 '태권도의 전설', '멕시코 태권도 대통령', '그랑 마에스트로'(대사부)로 불리는 자랑스런 한국인 입니다.

충남 홍성 출신인 문대원 대사범이 태권도와 인연을 맺은 것은 대전중학교 시절로 올라갑니다. 1962년 경희대 정치외교학과 2학년 때 유학차 도미 했습니다.

텍사스주립대 건축학과에 입학한 공인 태권도 2단의 그는 이듬해 오클라호마에서 열린 무술대회에 우연히 출전해 우승을 하기도 했습니다.

“당시 태권도는 미국에 이름이 없었고, 대부분 일본인이 전파한 가라테가 판을 치던 시대였지만 그들과 호구도 없이 맞붙으면 두려움을 주는 “대련”으로 체급에 관계 없이 3년 연속 통합 우승을 차지했고, "키가 2m가 넘는 거구를 넘어뜨리고 두꺼운 벽돌을 손날로 깨뜨리자 난리가 났었다"고 합니다.  초기 미국에서의  태권도 보급상황이야기입니다.

"무술 잡지의 표지 모델로 선정되기도 했고, 전국의 무술대회에서 초청장이 쇄도했다"고 합니다. 그러다가 운명적으로 멕시코 무술대회에까지 초청을 받게 됩니다.

1968년 멕시코 땅을 처음 밟은 문사범은 이듬해 정식 사범으로 멕시코에 정착했습니다. '코리안 가라테'로 아는 태권도를 멕시코인들에게 제대로 알리기 위해 '무덕관'이라는 태권도장을 열었습니다. 도장 정면에 붙어 있는 일장기와 일본 가라테의 전설인 마부니의 초상을 떼어 버리고 태극기를 붙여 나갔습니다.

"처음에는 수련생 대부분이 가라테에서 태권도로 전향한 동호인들이었어요. 1959년부터 보급된 가라테는 알고 있어도, 태권도는 생소한 동호인이 많았죠. 하지만 제게 배운 제자들이 1969년부터 1975년까지 멕시코 전 무도대회에서 모두 우승하면서 태권도가 가라테를 앞섰죠." 문사범의 말입니다.

제1회. 2회 세계태권도세계선수권대회(1973년.1975년)에서 멕시코가 3위를 하면서 멕시코에는 태권도 돌풍이 불었습니다. 이에 힘입어 문 사범은 1976년 '멕시코태권도협회'를 창립했습니다.

'문대원컵 전국태권도대회'도 타오르는 태권도 열풍을 부추겼습니다. 또 집 없는 멕시코 소녀들이 2∼3년간 머물며 직업교육을 받는 기숙학교나 한국 수녀가 운영하는 기숙학교 등을 찾아가 태권도를 가르쳤습니다.

이후 그는 다혈질의 멕시코인들에게 태권도 정신을 심어주며 모범적인 멕시코인들을 배출했습니다. 이런 공로로 멕시코 정부로부터 훈장과 표창장을 받았고, 한국 정부도 그를 초청해 포상했습니다.

태권도 정신을 통해 멕시코인들의 삶을 바꾸고자 노력하는 자랑스런 태권도 대사범님!

인생에서 승자는 경기에서 금메달을 얻는 사람이 아니라 삶의 순간마다 자신을 이기는 사람이라고 믿는 선배님!

그렇게 무도로서 태권도 정신을 가르친 것이 많은 멕시코인을 변화시키고 세계태권도인들에게 귀감이 되신 문대원 대사범님을 4월에 “태권도영웅”으로 선정 합니다.
