Grand master Dr. Tae Yun Kim(75 Y.O), founder of the art of Jung SuWon(DoJang), has donated $30,000 to the USTGS (under President Soo Kon Kim) to perpetuate the art of Taekwondo through all the Grand masters throughout America.

Grand master Dr. Kim is the Founder and CEO of high-tech Silicon Valley based company Lighthouse Worldwide Solutions, a TV talk showhost, a motivational speaker, an international best-selling author, and the first woman to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award and be named to the Hall of Fame of the USTGS in 2019 at the galaevent in Chicago.

Grand master Soo Kon Kim, the President of the USTGS, conducted an interview with Grandmaster Dr. Tae Yun Kim, in which she stated:“I rejoice in the lessons of pain and hurt. They give me strength and freedom. I love challenges. If anyone tells me that something is impossible for me to do, I roll up my sleeves and get to work! Impossible is NOT in my vocabulary.”

When she immigrated to the United States in 1969, her first job was cleaning toilets at a Howard Johnson motel and then pumping gas on the weekends. When asked when she felt that she was the most successful, her answer was:“I felt the most success when I was cleaning toilets! I knew that was not my final destination. I never for a moment lost my dream of having my own Taekwondo school and finding success in my life.”

Even then she knew that your thoughts create your reality. Shepracticed visualizing her Future Memory™ which set her on a path ofachieving success, even during the times when she lost every cent shehad.

She never gave up.With a fearless spirit, Grand master Dr. Kim always takes action nomatter how impossible a task seems to be. In 1978, Grandmaster Dr. Kim along with Grandmaster Ken Min(recipient of the Myongin Award at the 14h Annual Hall of FameAwards, 2nd Annual Myongin Award Gala in 2019 in Chicago) coachedthe U.S. Women’s and Men’s Taekwondo teams at the First Pre-WorldGames held at the Kukkiwon in Seoul, South Korea. Marcia Hall, one ofthe team members coached by Grandmaster Kim, was the firstAmerican ever to win gold at a taekwondo competition held in Korea.

From Vermont on the U.S. East Coast to Silicon Valley on the West Coast, she built an internationally successful computer business andopened a dynamic taekwondo Academy that has seen thousands ofstudents transform and develop.Grandmaster Dr. Kim says, “Obstacles and challenges are stepping-stones in our lives.

Look, Iwas born a girl during a time when only boys were desired as first-born children. And to make matters even more difficult, I wantedto train in Taekwondo, a forbidden activity for girls! The obstaclesI faced as a young girl in a male dominated society made mestronger.I had no connections, no one to back me up, no money, but I hadone thing that no one could take away from me.

I had myconnection with God, and He blessed me with an amazing Can DoSpirit!” She said that when she looked around at people who were successful,she asked herself, if they can do it, why not me? And this became herlifelong motto: He Can Do, She Can Do, Why Not Me!

Today, Grand master Dr. Tae Yun Kim has achieved much in her life. Herhigh-tech company is thriving even through the pandemic. 미국 캘리포니아 주 실리콘 밸리에서 정수원 태권도 도장을 하시는 김태연 대사범75,재미사업가 TYK 회장)께서 미국태권도 고단자회(회장 김수곤)에 3만불을 기부했다.

김 대사범은 1969년 미국에 이민하여 글로벌 테크놀러지 기업인 '라잇하우스 월드와이드 솔루션스' 등 6개 회사를 거느린 TYK 그룹의 회장이다.

첫 미국 생활에서 여관 청소를 하면서도 공립학교에 태권도를 지도했던 정신으로, 반도체 클린룸을 제작하는 라이트하우스 와 6 개 기업을 이끄는 TYK 그룹의 총수, TV Talk Show 진행자 그리고 2019년 여성으로는 최초로 미국 태권도 고단자회의 명예의 전당(평생 태권도인 상)에 오르신 분으로 실리콘 밸리 성공신화를 일궈낸 입지적 인물이다.

다음은 미국 태권도 고단자회의 김수곤 회장이 인터뷰를 통해, 김태연 회장의 성공 비결을 정리해 보았다.

첫째, 어떤 어려운 환경과 도전에도 꿈을 잃지 않는다. 처음 여관 청소부로 일하면서도 자신의 태권도 도장을 가지는 꿈을 한 순간도 잃지 않았다. Your Thoughts Create Your Reality!!!

둘째, 무모할 정도의 도전정신으로 마음먹은 일은 꼭 행동으로 옮긴다. 미국 동부끝 버몬트에서 서부끝 실리콘 밸리로 컴퓨터 사업과 세계 최고의 태권도 도장을 개척하러 만리 길을 무작정 나섰다.

셋째, 모든 장애물을 디딤돌로 만들자. 남녀차별이 심하던 시절에 여자로 태어나, 153cm 의 단신에, 남자들만 하는 무도계에, 미국 사회에서 소수 민족에, 동양여자에, 영어도 못하고 이혼에, 교통사고에, 그리고 종양까지 온통 성공할 수 없는 이유 뿐인 장애물들이 나를 더 강하게 단련시켰다.

넷째, 나는 할 수 있다는 ‘Can do 정신’이다. 나도 학벌도, 인맥도, 돈도 없었다. 나는 할 수없는 핑게를 대는 사람들에게, 사람은 누구나 성공할 수있다는 He can do, She can do, Why not me!를 가르치며 전도한다. 지금은 돈도 많이 벌었고 한국의 숙명여대에서 명예박사도 받았고 수많은 사회 봉사활동으로 ‘수잔 비.앤소니상’ 그리고 세계에서 가장 권위있는 ‘로마 콘스탄티누스 대제와 성 헬렌’의 그랜드 데임( Grand Dame) 기사작위를 받기도 했다.

다섯째, 어떤 어려운 상황이라도 원칙을 고수하는 정신이다. 나의 꿈은 세계 최고 그랜드마스터 김태연이 되는게 전부다. 무도 태권도 수련과 가르침은 내 인생의 전부다.

여섯째, 무도 태권도수련을 통한 자아개발이다. 무도정신은 복잡하고 혼란스러운 환경 속에서도 마음의 안정을 잃지 않으며 끊임없는 심신수양을 통해 참된 자아를 발견하고 행복한 삶을 살아가는 인격수양에 있다. 태권도는 인생을 어떻게 사느냐 와 인간을 구원하는 운동이다. Let’s Continue to Preserve and Promote the True Philosophy of Taekwondo as the Art of Living!

일곱번째, 인간에 대한 따뜻한 애정이다. 매일 매일을 인생 최고의날로 생각하며 가장 멋있는 옷을 입고 화장을 하고 사람을 즐겁게 맞이 하는것이 내가 하는 사랑과 존경의 표현이다. Let’s Celebrate Every Living Breath as if it were our Last! 이상과 같은 김태연 관장의 인생철학이 수많은 태권도인들에게 영감을 주고 동기부여가 되어 진정한 무도인으로 성공하기를 바라는 마음에서 옮겨 보았다.
