On September 4, 2025, a ceremony for Taekwondo Day was held at T1 Stadium dedicated to Taekwondo at Taekwondowon Center in Muju County, North Jeolla Province under the slogan "Taekwondowon, the Power of Culture Connecting with the World," co-hosted by the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, Kukkiwon, the World Taekwondo Federation, and the Korea Taekwondo Association. It was a meaningful occasion to re-examine the cultural value and diplomatic role of Taekwondo, with some 400 key figures including Kukkiwon, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the World Taekwondo Federation attending.
The ceremony was attended by key figures in the Taekwondo community, including Choi Sung-hee, Sports Cooperation Officer of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Kim Jung-heon, Chairman of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, Lee dongsub president of Kukkiwon, Yang Jin-bang, president of the Korea Taekwondo Association, Kim Sang-jin, president of the Asia Taekwondo Union, Kim Jung-rok, former president of the 9th Association, Heo Song, president of the 9th Association, Yoon Woong-seok, former Chairman of the Kukkiwon Training Institute, Gwangju City, Ko Bong-soo president of the Association of South Jeolla Province, Lee Kyung-bae, president of the Korea Middle and High School, Oh Hyun-deuk, former president of the Kukkiwon, Lee Young-seok, former president of the Gwangju City Association, Choi Jae-chun Chairman of the Kim un yong Sports Committee, and members of the 9th Association, Jinyoung Kim G.M(Texas, USA). In particular, local government officials such as Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province and Muju-gun also joined forces to emphasize the importance of public-private cooperation for the development of Taekwondo.
The ceremony was decorated with various celebratory performances and demonstrations. Taekwondo's Pumsae demonstration by the elders of the 9th tier and Byun Jae-young of the national team showed its deep history and technological legitimacy. In addition, the dynamic performance of the World Taekwondo Federation demonstration team was well received by the audience.
Subsequently, a ceremony was held to award commendations to those who contributed to the development of Taekwondo. Eleven people, including Professor Jeong Byung-ki of Keimyung University and Kang Dong-hwa of the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Council, received the commendation from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, while Lim Dong-moon, head of the International Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, received the commendation from the Foreign Minister for his contribution to the spread of public diplomacy in Taekwondo. This shows that Taekwondo is playing an important role in international relations beyond just sports.
The highlight of the ceremony was the special performance. Using LED lights, the team expressed the power of Taekwondo to bring the world together. In addition, 193 teams from 52 countries sent congratulatory photos and videos, creating a place of harmony among taekwondo fighters from all over the world, deeply moving.
Kim Jung-heon, chairman of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, said in a commemorative speech, "I salute all Taekwondo people who have devoted themselves to this glorious day of Taekwondo with 213 countries and '213 + 1' including refugee teams." He expressed his ambition to continue his efforts to inherit and develop Taekwondo as a culture, Olympic sport, and martial arts. Through this ceremony, the Taekwondo Center has solidified its status as a sacred place for world Taekwondo and a platform for global cultural diplomacy.
2025년 태권도의 날 기념식 성료…태권도원, 태권도 문화 외교의 중심으로 우뚝
2025년 9월 4일, 태권도진흥재단, 국기원, 세계태권도연맹, 대한태권도협회가 공동 주최한 ‘태권도, 세계와 연결하는 문화의 힘’이라는 슬로건으로 ‘태권도의 날’ 기념식이 전라북도 무주군 태권도원 태권도 전용 T1 경기장에서 성대하게 열렸다. 국기원, 문화체육관광부, 세계태권도연맹 등 주요 인사들과 국내외 태권도 관계자 400여 명이 참석한 가운데, 태권도가 가진 문화적 가치와 외교적 역할을 재조명하는 뜻깊은 자리였다.
이날 기념식에는 문화체육관광부 최성희 체육협력관, 김중헌 태권도진흥재단 이사장, 국기원 이동섭 원장, 대한태권도협회 양진방 회장, 김상진 아시아태권도연맹 회장, 김정록 전 9단회 회장, 허송 9단회 회장, 윤웅석 전 국기원연수 원장, 윤웅철 광주시, 고봉수 전라남도 협회장, 이경배 한국중고등학교 회장, 오현득 전 국기원장, 이영석 전 광주시협회장, 최재춘 김운용스포츠위원회 위원장, 김진영 대사범 (미국 텍사스주) 9단회회원들 등 태권도계 주요 인사들이 대거 참석해 자리를 빛냈다. 특히 전북특별자치도와 무주군 등 지방정부 관계자들도 함께하여 태권도 발전을 위한 민관 협력의 중요성을 강조했다.
기념식은 다채로운 축하 공연과 시범으로 꾸며졌다. 태권도 9단회 원로들과 품새 국가대표 변재영 선수의 품새 시범은 태권도의 깊은 역사와 기술적 정통성을 보여주었다. 또한, 세계태권도연맹 시범단의 역동적인 공연은 관객들의 뜨거운 호응을 얻었다.
이어서 태권도 발전에 기여한 인물들에 대한 표창 수여식이 진행됐다. 계명대학교 정병기 교수와 전북특별자치도의회 강동화 의원 등 11명이 문화체육관광부 장관 표창을 받았으며, 태권도진흥재단 임동문 국제부장은 태권도 공공외교 확산에 기여한 공로로 외교부장관 표창을 수상했다. 이는 태권도가 단순한 스포츠를 넘어 국제 관계에서도 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 보여준다.
기념식의 하이라이트는 특별 퍼포먼스였다. LED를 활용해 슬로건을 표출하며 태권도가 세계를 하나로 연결하는 힘을 시각적으로 표현했다. 또한 52개국 193개 팀이 보낸 축하 사진과 영상은 전 세계 태권도인들이 함께하는 화합의 장을 만들며 깊은 감동을 선사했다.
김중헌 태권도진흥재단 이사장은 기념사를 통해 “세계 213개국과 난민팀을 포함한 ‘213 + 1’이 함께하는 태권도의 영광스러운 오늘이 있기까지 헌신해 오신 모든 태권도인들에게 경의를 표한다”고 말했다. 그는 앞으로도 태권도를 문화, 올림픽 종목, 그리고 무예로서 계승하고 발전시키기 위한 노력을 계속할 것이라고 포부를 밝혔다. 이번 기념식을 통해 태권도원은 명실상부한 세계 태권도의 성지이자, 글로벌 문화 외교의 플랫폼으로서의 위상을 공고히 했다.
