 Master Sam Johnston(Canada, 7th Dan) won Gold Medal at 2017 Hanmadang after overcoming Leukaemia

A Taekwondo master, who is overcoming leukemia through Taekwondo, participated in '2017 Anyang World Taekwondo Hanmadang', and has become a hot topic.

The master of the hot issue is Sam Johnston of Canada who has 7th Dan ranks of Taekwondo won the gold medal on the final of speed breaking of Senior ⅠⅡⅢ Master Integration Division (overseas) on the second day of the Hanmadang which held from July 29th to August 1st.

Master Sam Johnston, who finished fourth in the qualifying round of 10 out of the 19 finalists, came out on top with outstanding performances in the finals.

In May 2010, Master Sam Johnston who was diagnosed with leukemia, was shocked to hear that his future survival rate was only 2%.

"My body was not good, so I went to the hospital and was examined, and the result was dark, which I did not think was leukemia. I was confident in my health, but I did not understand how it happened to me. The doctor even talked to my wife about his death in two weeks, "he recalled.

In spite of the sudden onset of leukemia, Master Sam Jonston began to practice Taekwondo training and chemotherapy instead of giving up his life. After seven years, his immune system has become so close to cure today that he is allowed to take part in the Hanmadang by his doctor.

Asked about the opinion of the winner, he said “As a matter of fact that I didn’t expect the winning Taekwondo, but I was much honored. I could not change anything for the participating the Hanmadang with those who loves Taekwondo.” said a special affection for the Hanmadang.

"I would like to encourage Taekwondo practice if someone is willing to give up his/her lives by getting a disease that is difficult to heal. Because the strong spirit and confidence through Taekwondo should get over the difficult challenges of life," he raised the thumb and praised Taekwondo.

   태권도로 백혈병 극복한 샘 존스턴 사범 속도격파 시니어 마스터부문정상

태권도를 통해 백혈병을 극복하고 있는 태권도인이 ‘2017 안양 세계태권도한마당(이하 한마당)’에 참가, 투혼을 발휘해 화제가 되고 있다.

화제의 주인공은 캐나다의 샘 존스턴 사범이다. 태권도 7단인 샘 존스턴 사범은 한마당 둘째 날인 지난 30일 기록경기의 속도격파 시니어 ⅠⅡⅢ 마스터 통합 부문(해외) 결선에서 금메달을 목에 걸었다.

19명 중 10명의 결선 진출자를 선발하는 예선을 4위로 통과한 샘 존스턴 사범은 결선에서 한층 뛰어난 기량을 선보이며 정상에 올랐다.

샘 존스턴 사범은 지난 2010년 5월 의사로부터 백혈병 진단과 함께 앞으로의 생존 확률이 2% 밖에 안 된다는 충격적인 이야기를 듣게 된다.

그는 “몸이 좋지 않아 병원에 가서 검사를 받았는데 백혈병이라는 생각하지도 못했던 암담한 결과가 나왔다. 건강만큼은 자신했었는데 어떻게 나한테 이런 일이 생겼는지 이해가 되지 않았다. 의사가 아내한테는 2주 안에 사망에 이를 수 있다는 이야기까지 했다”고 당시를 회상했다.

갑자기 찾아온 백혈병에도 불구하고 샘 존스턴 사범은 삶을 포기하기 보다는 태권도 수련과 항암치료를 병행하기 시작했고, 7년이 지난 오늘날 완치에 가까울 정도로 면역력이 높아져 의사로부터 이번 한마당에 참가해도 좋다는 허락을 받기에 이르렀다.

한마당 우승 소감을 묻는 질문에 그는 “정말 영광스러운 일이지만 사실 우승을 기대하고 한마당에 참가한 것이 아니다. 태권도를 아끼고 사랑하는 이들과 함께할 수 있는 한마당에 참가한 그 자체가 나에게는 무엇과도 바꿀 수 없는 의미가 있다”며 한마당에 대한 각별한 애정을 드러냈다.

그는 “갑작스럽게 치유하기 힘든 병을 얻어 삶을 포기하려는 이들이 조금이라도 움직일 수 있는 여력이 된다면 태권도 수련을 권해주고 싶다. 태권도를 통해 얻을 수 있는 강한 정신력과 자신감은 삶의 힘든 난관을 극복하기 위한 의지가 될 수 있다”고 엄지를 치켜세우며 태권도 예찬론을 폈다.
