World Taekwondo (WT) teamed up with the Asia Development Foundation (ADF) to start their new WT-ADF Cares Program for students at the Um Hong Gil Human School near Pokhara, Nepal on August 22, 2022 for a one-year period.

Under the theme “Let’s Build the Future with Taekwondo,” the 2022-2023 WT-ADF Um Hong Gil Human School Cares project is benefitting 87 middle and high school students at Birenthanti Secondary School in Birenthanti, about 2 hours from Pokhara by car.

The new $25,000 WT-ADF Um Hong Gil Human School Cares project is funded by the ADF and the Nepal Taekwondo Association runs the program by dispatching local taekwondo instructors to the secondary school.

The Cares program offers the school students one and a half hours of taekwondo and Korean language classes after school four times a week.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue said, “The WT-ADF Um Hong Gil Human School Cares Program is very meaningful as it teaches taekwondo and the Korean language to school students. I hope the Cares program will further expand to other schools in Nepal and other Asian countries.”

WT signed a cooperation agreement with the Seoul-based Um Hong Gil Human Foundation, headed by chairman Lee Jae-hoo, at the WT headquarters in Seoul, Korea on August 29, 2017.

The Um Hong Gil Human Foundation was established in 2008 and has since built 16 human schools in remote areas of Nepal to commemorate Korean mountain climber Um Hong Gil’s achievement of climbing 16 slopes higher than 8,000 meters in the Himalayas, the first in the world. The 16 slopes are the commonly recognized 14-peak Himalayan set and two peaks of Yalung Kang and Lhotse Shar that Um believes deserve the same status as the original 14.

Birenthanti Secondary School, which was built in 2013, was the 4th human school by the Um Hong Gil Human Foundation.

WT will cooperate with the Nepal Taekwondo Association to organize the opening ceremony of the WT-ADF Um Hong Gil Human School Cares Program at the secondary school on September 23 with the attendance of WT President Choue and mountaineer Um Hong Gil, among others.

Since 2016, WT has carried out its Cares programs under the mission “Taekwondo for All” and “World Peace through Taekwondo.” The vision of the WT Cares Program is to provide taekwondo to those in deed and empower the powerless, such as orphans, reformatory inmates, alcohol and drug addicts and street children, in developing countries.

In January 2019, WT and the ADF, headed by Kim Joon-il, signed a memorandum of understanding on the WT Cares Program to donate 100 million Korean won (about $90,000) to WT. The ADF donated WT, in Cares funds, $150,000 in 2020, $200,000 in 2021 and $150,000 in 2022.

The WT-ADF Cares projects are under way in Nepal, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan and Timor-Leste. WT plans to start a new Cares project in Afghanistan this year. WT wishes to expand the WT Cares projects outside Asia with new donations.

세계태권도연맹(WT, 총재 조정원)은 아시아발전재단(ADF, 이사장 김준일) 후원으로 8월 22일부터 1년간 일정으로 네팔 포카라 인근 엄홍길휴먼재단(이사장 이재후)이 설립한 오지 학교 학생을 대상으로 태권도와 한국어를 가르치는 ‘WT-ADF  케어스(Cares) 프로그램’ 사업을 시작했다.

‘태권도로 미래를 만들자’라는 슬로건 아래 ‘2022-2023 WT-ADF 엄홍길 휴먼스쿨 케어스 프로젝트’는 총 25,000불 예산으로 네팔 포카라에서 차로 약 2시간 거리에 위치한 비렌탄티 중고등학교(Birenthanti Secondary School) 학생 87명을 대상으로 현지 태권도 사범과 한국어 자원 봉사자를 파견하여 수업을 하고 있다.

네팔태권도협회에서 현지 태권도 지도자 두 명을 학교에 파견하여 일주일에 네 번, 하루에 한시간 30분씩 방과 후 수업으로 태권도 훈련을 시키고 있다.

조정원 WT 총재는 “엄홍길 휴먼스쿨 WT-ADF 케어스 프로젝트는 학교 학생들을 대상으로 태권도와 한국어를 가르친다는 점에서 그 의미가 크다. 이러한 케어스 프로그램이 네팔과 다른 아시아 국가들 학교로 확대되기를 바란다”고 말했다.

WT는 서울에 본부를 둔 엄홍길휴먼재단과 2017년 8월 29일 WT본부에서 업무협약을 체결한 바 있으며, 엄홍길 대장은 엄홍길휴먼재단 상임이사를 맡고 있다.

엄홍길휴먼재단은 2008년 설립이래 세계 최초로 한국 산악인 엄홍길 대장이 히말라야 8000미터 고봉 16좌를 등정한 업적을 기념하기 위해 네팔 오지에 총 16개 엄홍길 휴먼스쿨을 건립했다. 16좌는 통상적으로 알려진 14개 히말라야 8000미터 고봉에, 엄 대장이 14좌에 결코 뒤지지 않는다고 믿는 얄륭캉(Yalung Kang) 및 로체샤르(Lhotse Shar) 두 고봉을 합친 숫자이다.

비렌탄티 중고등학교는 엄홍길휴먼재단이 2013년에 설립한 4번째 휴먼스쿨이며,현재 3개 학교가 추가 건립 중이다.

WT는 오는 9월 23일 조정원 WT총재, 엄홍길 대장 그리고 네팔태권도협회장 등이 참석한 가운데 WT-ADF 엄홍길 휴먼스쿨 케어스 프로그램 개막식을 비렌탄디 학교에서 개최할 계획이다.

2016년부터 WT는 ‘모두에게 태권도를,’ ‘태권도를 통한 세계 평화’라는 미션 아래 케어스 프로그램을 실시해 오고 있으며, 케어스 프로그램의 비전은 고아, 재소자, 알코올 및 마약 중독자, 그리고 길거리 청소년 등 어려움에 처한 저개발국 청소년들에게 태권도를 통해 꿈과 희망을 주는 것이다.

2019년 1월 WT는 ADF와 아시아 지역 소외계층에게 태권도와 한국어 무상 교육을 위한 WT 케어스 발전 기금관련 업무협약을 체결하고, ADF가 WT에 1억원을 지정 기부했다. 이어서 ADF는 2020년 미화 15만불, 2021년 20만불 그리고 2022년 15만불을 WT-ADF 케어스 프로그램 지정 기부금으로 WT에 전달했다.

WT는 ADF와 함께 현재 네팔, 캄보디아, 스리랑카, 부탄, 몽골, 키르기스스탄 그리고 동티모르에서 케어스 프로그램을 진행하고 있으며, 빠르면 올해 중 아프카니스탄에서 케어스 프로젝트를 시작하려고 준비중이다. WT는 새로운 재정 후원자를 찾으면 아시아 이외 지역으로 케어스 프로젝트를 확대하기를 원하고 있다.
