President Supreme Grand master Kim Gyung-Duk of Gyeonggi-Do Taekwondo Association (GTA) always shouts for noblesse oblige and helps Taekwondoists who need help. President Kim and GTA executives and employees visited Insung Taekwondo School’s Instructor Lee Sang-Yeob (33, Seoul) who has been diagnosed with and is suffering from granulocytic sarcoma (a type of malignant hematologic disease). They delivered the funds of 2,000,000 won on January 6th and 17,800,000 won on February 3rd to encourage hope in life. 

President Kim said, “When any Taekwondoists are going through a tough time, all Taekwondoists are willing to cooperate together and help them overcome the difficulty regardless of regions based on the Taekwondo spirit.” President Kim has been leading a fund-raising campaign at GTA members’ Taekwondo schools, 9 Dan Association, and various Taekwondo-related events for Instructor Kim, who has been fighting off the disease.

Instructor Lee commented in a crying voice, “Although I’m terminally ill patient, I have been enduring for over one year. I promise to overcome my disease with support from Taekwondoists. I will use the funds from GTA to get PET-CT that I couldn’t afford. I will also get steroids, pay for overdue medical bills, and try the expensive medicines that I couldn’t try before. Thanks to the support from GTA, I can now get treatments more actively. I’d like to express my deep gratitude for President Kim and GTA’s executives and employees for their support. I will also pray to keep my will to live. Thank you so much.”  

Instructor Lee opened his Taekwondo school in 2015 and had a wonderful time teaching 100 students. In September 2021, he suddenly had pain in his body and was taken to the emergency room. However, the hospital couldn’t find his disease and he had to spend about 90 days at an aseptic room with a respirator. In February 2022, he was diagnosed with a granulocytic sarcoma, which is a type of malignant hematologic disease.

Granulocytic sarcoma is an extremely rare disease. About 80 people were diagnosed of this disease recently, and they all died. Instructor Lee is the only person who survived the granulocytic sarcoma, even though he lost 20 kilograms. Since granulocytic sarcoma is extremely rare, it doesn’t have a drug. Fortunately, Instructor Lee showed improvements after administering the leukemia drugs.  

Nevertheless, Instructor Lee had to struggle without proper treatment because the medical fee was too expensive. 

Instructor Lee said, “A doctor saw me and said, ‘Oh, you are still doing great! Considering your conditions, you have exceeded the limitations of human. It’s like a miracle.’ I promise to overcome my disease and show the indomitable Taekwondo spirit to my family and GTA.”  

Meanwhile, Instructor Lee’s father quitted drinking and smoking, which he used to enjoy, in order to prepare his body for a bone-marrow transplantation.

평소 노블리스 오블리주 정신을 주창하며 어려운 태권도인 찾아 선행에 앞장서고 있는 경기도태권도협회 김경덕 회장과 임직원들은 '과립구육종'(일종의 악성 혈액암)이라는 진단을 받고 투병 중인 인성태권도장 이상엽 관장(33,서울)을 찾아 1월 6일 1차 200만 원의 성금에 이어 2월 3일, 2차로 17,800,000여 만 원의 성금을 모아 전달하고 삶의 희망을 북돋아 주었다.

김경덕 회장은 “지역을 불문하고 어려움을 겪고 있는 태권도인이 있다면 우리 태권도인들이 지역을 떠나 힘을 모아 함께 어려움을 극복하는 것이 태권도 정신이기도 하다“ 라며 도내 회원 도장과 9단회 그리고 각종 태권도 행사장에서 힘겹게 병마와 사투를 벌리고 있는 이상엽 관장 돕기 모금 운동을 펼쳐왔다.

이날 이상엽 관장은 ”제가 병 때문에 비록 시한부 인생이라 하지만 저는 벌써 1년 이상을 잘 버티고 있으며 이렇게 도와주시는 태권도인들의 힘을 빌어 꼭 완치 하겠습니다. 그리고 이번에 경기도태권도협회에서 전해 주신 성금은 그동안 치료비가 없어서 실행 못 했던 펫시티도 찍고 스테로이드도 맞고 밀려 있던 치료비도 내고 또 비싸서 복용 못한 좋은 치료제도 사용하게 됐고 정말 이번에 이렇게 경기도 태권도 협회에서 큰 힘을 주셨기 때문에 좀 더 적극적인 치료도 받게 되었습니다. 도와 주시는 경기도태권도협회 회장님과 임원님들에게 깊은 감사의 말씀을 드립니다. 기도하며 삶의 의지를 더욱 높이겠습니다. 정말 감사합니다. “라며 울먹이며 말했다.

이상엽 관장이 치료중 가족과 화상통화를 하고 있다 (WTU)

이상엽 관장은 2015년 태권도장을 개설하고 100여명의 관원을 지도하며 나름 보람찬 시간을 지내고 있다가 2021년 9월 돌연 고통스런 알 수 없는 몸상태가 발생하여 응급실에 실려 갔다. 그러나 병원에서는 그의 병이 무엇인지 찾지를 못하고 무균실에서 약 90일간 인공호흡기를 끼고 지내고 있다가 결국 2022년 2월경 '과립구육종'이란 일종의 혈액 악성종양이란 진단을 받게 되었다.

현재 아래배에 제2의 인공 항문을 달고 있는 등 이병은 워낙 희귀한 병이라 최근 전 세계적으로 70~80여 명이 발병했으나 모두 사망하고 현재는 20KG의 살이 빠진 상태로 이 관장만 유일한 생존자이다. 더구나 이병은 치료제 자체가 없다고 한다. 그나마 다행인 것은 백혈병에 투여하는 약을 가지고 이 관장에게 투여한 결과 다행히 어느 정도의 효과를 보았다고 한다.

그러나 이 관장은 엄청난 치료비가 많이 들어가는 병이라 치료를 제때 하지도 못하고 힘겨운 시간을 보내고 있다.

그래도 이 관장은 "한 의사가 저를 보고 어! 아직 잘 있네 지금 병의 수치를 보아 인간이 버틸 수 있는 한계를 넘었다. 이건 기적에 가까운 상황이다.라고 말했듯이 저는 기필코 이 병을 이기고 가족과 저를 도와 주신 경기도태권도협회 등 태권도인들에게 불굴의 태권도 정신을 보이겠다" 다짐했다. 

한편 외동 아들인 이 관장의 아버지는 결국 최종 골수이식을 대비하여 평소 즐기던 술과 담배를 끊고 최상의 몸상태를 만들고 있다 한다.
