Last February 2nd, 2023, 2:00 PM, the World Taekwond United News (Publisher : Lee Seok-je, hereinafter “WTU”) gathered with executives (Senior Instructor Lee Tae-kyu, Planning Director Cha Jung-nim, Secretary Lee Ki-han, Recording Secretary Lee Han-woo) at the training institute of the International Martial Arts Olympiad (Presiden Dr. Oh No-kyun, hereinafter “IMAO”)located at Daejeon and signed MOU for mutual cooperation and development.

The two institutes discussed for two hours and agreed to cooperate on overseas promotion, audience attraction, and especially overseas branch expansion for 41th World Geumsan Ginseng Festival, 2023 Visit Kore Year, and Geumsan International Martial Arts Olympiad on October.   

In the meeting, President Dr. Oh of IMAO said, “Our IMAO already has strong organizational power many know-hows. We are looking forward to work with the world’s first multilingual Taekwondo platform, WTU. If necessary, we are willing to provide financial support and share information.”

Publisher Lee of WTU answered, “We worked with President Dr. Oh for various events throughout a long time and we built up strong trust with each other. We are also well aware of IMAO’s establishment purpose. We are honored to contribute to development of the true global martial arts based on Taekwondo instead of self-interest and we will try our best to cooperate with IMAO.”

Olympiad is an international exhibition event where international students under 20 compete together and it holds 6 international competitions including International Math Qualifier (IMQ), International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), International Biology Olympiad (IBO), and International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO).

IAMO’s International Martial Arts Olympiad has been created by Professor Dr. Oh No-kyun (Chung Cheong University) at UNESCO World Heritage Beopjusa Temple in September 2019 and initiated by 100 martial artists to hold inaugural assembly and establish international headquarters at Sejong City.

When President Dr. Oh worked at Chung Cheong University in 1998 as a professor, he came up with an idea of “International Youth Taekwondo and Cultural Tourism Festival” and held the festival every year to lay the groundworks for spreading Taekwondo and Korean cultures all over the world. The Korean local governments also benchmarked on the festival to spread the Korean culture globally. In response, the Korean government designated “International Youth Taekwondo and Cultural Tourism Festival” as one of the 8 national festivals.  

지난 8일 2시 대전 (사)국제무예올림피아드(총재 오노균, 이하 IMAO) 연수원에서 세계태권도연합뉴스(발행인 이석제, 이하 WTU)가 실무자들(이태규 수석사범, 차정님 기획이사. 이기한 사무관, 이한우 기록관)이 배석한 가운데 상호 협력과 발전을 위한 업무협약을 체결했다.

두 기관은 2시간의 협의를 통해 1차로 올 제41회 세계금산인삼축제와 2023 한국방문의 해 그리고 올 10월 금산국제무예올림피아드에서 해외홍보 및 모객 활동에 협력하고 특히, 해외 지부 확충에 총력을 다하기로 했다.

IMAO 오 총재는 인사말에서“우리 (사)국제무예올림피아드 연맹은 이미 탄탄한 조직력과 다양한 많은 노하우가 있다. 여기에 세계유일의 다국에 매체 WTU와 협업에 큰 기대를 한다. 필요하다면 재정적 지원과 정보공유도 실행하겠다”라고 말했다.

화답에 나선 WTU 이 발행인은 “우리는 이미 오랜 시간 IMAO와 오 총재님의 행사를 많이 취재했기에 확고한 신뢰를 갖고 있다. 또한 IMAO의 설립 취지를 잘 알고 있다. 사욕이 아닌 태권도를 기반으로 진정한 지구촌 무예 발전에 헌신하기에 우리도 영광으로 생각하며 미력하지만 최선을 다해 협력하겠다”라고 말했다.

올림피아드는 전 세계 20세 이하의 학생들이 자신의 실력을 겨루는 국제전시행사로 국제수학올림피아드(IMO), 국제정보올림피아드(IOI), 국제물리올림피아드(IPhO), 국제화학올림피아드(IChO), 국제생물올림피아드(IBO), 국제천문올림피아드(IAO)등 6개의 국제대회가 매년 열리고 있다.

IMAO국제무예올림피아드는 2019년 9월 유네스코세계문화유산 보은 법주사에서 오노균 교수(충청대)가 창안하여 무예인 100여 명이 발기하여 창립총회를 개최하고 세종특별자치시에 국제본부(HQ)를 설립했다.

한편 오 총재는 1998년 충청대학교 교수로 재직시 ‘세계청소년태권도문화관광축제’를 창안하여 매년 개최하며 태권도와 한국문화를 전 세계에 알리는 초석을 다졌고 이후 한국의 각 지자체에서 서로 벤치마킹하여 우리 문화를 세계에 알리는 업적을 남겼다. 결국 한국 정부는 ‘세계청소년태권도문화관광축제’를 국가 8대 축제로 지정된 바 있다.
