The IOC today announced that Virtual Taekwondo will be one of nine featured games at the Olympic Esports Series 2023.

The Olympic Esports Series 2023, is a global virtual and simulated sports competition, which will begin on 1 March when professional and amateur players from around the world are invited to take part in qualification rounds. The Series will culminate with the Olympic Esports Finals 2023 at Singapore’s Suntec Centre 22 – 25 June.

Virtual Taekwondo will be the only combat sport represented at the competition and has been developed in partnership between World Taekwondo and Refract Technologies. The virtual sport uses unique motion tracking technology, creating an even playing field for those of all physical abilities to engage in one-on-one, non-contact sparring.

The Virtual Taekwondo competition will see eight Olympic Taekwondo legends (four male and four female) and eight young athletes (four male and four female) compete in an invitational event at the finals in Singapore. The exciting competitive action will be streamed live on Olympic digital and social channels as the athletes compete to become Olympic Esports champion.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue said:

At World Taekwondo we have always embraced the latest technologies to evolve our sport. Virtual Taekwondo is fully aligned with our commitment to inclusivity and equality and allows people of all ages, genders and abilities to take part while keeping physically active.”

The Olympic Esports Series 2023 will build on the success of the 2021 series which attracted over 250,000 participants from across 100 countries. The development of virtual sports is a key element of Olympic Agenda 2020+5.

국제올림픽위원회(IOC)는 태권도가 ‘올림픽 E스포츠 시리즈 2023(Olympic Esports Series 2023)’의 9개 주요 경기 중 하나로 선정됐다고 현지시간 3월 1일 발표했다.

올림픽 E스포츠 시리즈의 9개 종목은 태권도를 비롯해 양궁, 야구, 체스, 사이클, 댄스, 세일링, 테니스, 모터스포츠이다. 태권도는 격투 종목 중에서는 유일하게 이번 대회에 채택되었다.

‘올림픽 E스포츠 시리즈 2023’은 가상 및 시뮬레이션 스포츠 대회로 2023년 3월부터 예선이 시작되고 결승전은 6월 22일부터 25일까지 싱가포르 선텍 센터(Suntec Center)에서 열린다.

가상 스포츠는 IOC가 스포츠의 미래 동력으로 판단하고 올림픽 아젠다 2020+5 의제 중의 하나로 삼은 핵심 사업 중의 하나이다.

세계태권도연맹(WT)은 가상 스포츠의 시장성을 예측하고 지난 수년간 싱가포르에 기반을 둔 게임 및 정보기술회사인 리프랙트(Refract)와 손잡고 가상 태권도 겨루기 시스템을 개발해왔다. 

손으로만 하는 컴퓨터 게임과 달리 가상 겨루기 시스템은 실제 태권도 경기와 유사하며 모션 트래킹 기술을 활용하여 전신 움직임을 정교하게 추적해 실제 상대의 아바타와 일대일로 겨루는 방식이다. 플레이어의 몸이 게임 컨트롤러로 변신하는 것이다. 성별, 나이, 신체적 장벽, 지역 등의 제약을 받지 않고 비대면 경쟁이 가능한 새로운 경쟁의 장이 열리게 된 것이다.

태권도 경기는 예선없이 결승전에 남녀 선수 각 4명과 주니어 남녀 선수 각 4명이 출전하여 가상 겨루기 대결을 펼칠 예정이다. 경기규칙은 일반 겨루기 경기규칙과 같이 2분 3회전, 3전 2선승제로 치러진다.

조정원 WT 총재는 "태권도가 ‘올림픽 E스포츠 시리즈’에 선정되어 기쁘다. 그동안 끊임없이 새로운 영역에 도전해 최신 기술을 도입, 발전시킨 노력의 결과”라며 “태권도가 앞으로 더욱 젊고 새로운 팬들에게 다가가는 기회가 될 것이다”라고 말했다.

IOC는 올림픽 E스포츠 시리즈 2023은 100여개국에서 250,000명 이상이 참여할 것으로 기대한다고 설명했다.
