Sofia will soon welcome the world’s best young Taekwondo athletes as it prepares to host the 2022 World Taekwondo Cadet and World Taekwondo Junior Championships on July 28-31 and August 2-7 respectively.

The Sofia 2022 World Taekwondo Cadet Championships has seen 683 athletes aged between 12 and 14 years old from 77 countries register. It will be the 5^th edition of the event after the previous edition was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, 811 athletes aged between 14 and 17 from 90 countries plus a Refugee Team have registered for the Sofia 2022 World Taekwondo Junior Championships which is taking place for the first time since 2018 and marks the reset of the competition.

Both events will take place at the Arena Armeec and use the newly introduced best of three system with three, two minute rounds. On the last day of competitions there will be presentations for MVP and best of the event for referee, coach and athlete.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue said:

“The importance of the Cadet and Junior World Championships cannot be understated. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, 17 of the 32 Taekwondo medallists had medalled at either the World Taekwondo Cadet or Junior Championships or at the Youth Olympic Games. This shows that these Championships provide invaluable experience and are often the starting block for the future stars of our sport.

“Most significantly, the World Taekwondo Cadet Championships is an ideal platform for athletes from all walks of life to exchange cultures and become friends. This is the spirit of Taekwondo that eventually contributes to a world where Peace is more Precious than Triumph.”

The World Taekwondo General Assembly will take place on the occasion of the World Championships on August 1 with the World Taekwondo Council meeting taking place that morning. It will be the first time that the World Taekwondo General Assembly has taken place in person since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It will also be the first time that the World Taekwondo Hall of Fame award ceremony will be held and the first inductees will be revealed.

세계태권도연맹(WT, 총재 조정원)은 불가리아 소피아에서 세계유소년태권도선수권대회와 세계청소년태권도선수권대회를 연달아 개최한다.

2년마다 개최되던 세계유소년대회와 세계청소년대회는 코로나 감염증으로 지난 2019년 우즈베키스탄 유소년대회 이후 3년 만에, 2018년 튀니지 청소년대회 이후 4년 만에 개최되는 것이다.

7월 28일부터 31일까지 나흘간 열리는 세계유소년대회에는 77개국에서 만 12세부터 14세까지 사이의 선수 683명이 출전한다.

한국은 이번 대회에 남녀 선수 각각 8명씩 총 16명이 출전한다. 남자 선수는 -41kg 이동건(사당중), -45kg 김민규(상모중), -49kg 이은석(서원중), -53kg 이준혁(청주중), -57kg 김건우(울산중), -61kg 김시현(울산중), -65kg 강동민(소가야중), +65kg 김민준(서원중) 와 여자 선수 -37kg 김해인(한솔초), -41kg 이유민(사당중), -44kg 오태린(동평중), -47kg 김향기(해제중), -51kg 조예나(여수여중), -55kg 서다원(신원중), -59kg 이가은(동평중), +59kg 최보영(목포유달중) 등이다.

세계유소년대회 이틀 후인 8월2일부터는 세계청소년선수권대회가 7일까지 6일간 펼쳐진다.  

만 15세부터 17세 사이의 남녀 선수 10체급으로 치르는 이번 대회는 90개국 811명의 선수가 참가신청을 했으며, 이중 3명의 선수가 난민팀으로 출전한다.

청소년대회에 출전하는 한국선수는 남녀선수 각각 10명씩 총 20명이다. 남자 선수는 -45kg 추연의(관악고), -48kg 신주원(속초중), -51kg 양희찬(충북체고), -55kg 홍의준(관악고), -59kg 정우혁(한성고), -63kg 서현우(풍생고), -68kg 김태훈(강원체고), -73kg 김도현(충남체고), -78kg 이인혁(다사고), +78kg 류국환(한성고) 이다. 여자 선수는  -42kg 정소연(해제중), -44kg 오혜진(창동고), -46kg 김윤서(대전체고), -49kg 김민서(효정고), -52kg 서여원(울산스포츠과학고), -55kg 김가현(광주체고), -59kg 이한나(대전체고), -63kg 배다희(서울체고), -68kg 홍효림(강원체고), +68kg 정수지(충북체고) 등이다.

소피아 유소년대회와 청소년대회 전경기는 WT 홈페이지 (http://www.worldtaekwondo.org)와 WT 유튜브 채널 (https://www.youtube.com/user/worldtaekwondo)을 통해 실시간 중계될 예정이다.

8월 1일에는 WT 집행위원회와 총회가 개최된다. WT 총회는 2019년 맨체스터 총회 이후 코로나 감염증으로 온라인으로만 열리다가 이번에 현장에서 다시 개최하게 되었다.

총회에서는 초대 WT 명예의 전당 헌액 행사도 같이 열린다. 2020년 8월에 올림픽 태권도 발전에 기여한 평생공로, 임원, 선수  세 부문에서 헌액자를 선정했다. 고 김운용 WT 초대 총재, 고 후안 안토니오 사마란치 IOC 위원장이 평생 공로 부문, 임원 부문에 이대순 전 WT 부총재 그리고 이집트의 고 아흐메드 풀리 WT 부총재, 선수 부문에는 정국현 WT 집행위원과 시드니와 아테네 올림픽 2연속 우승자인 중국의 첸종이 선정되었다. 헌액 행사는 코로나 사태로 계속 연기되다 이번 소피아 총회에서 열리게 된 것이다.
