Taekwondo, a martial art symbolizing Korea and containing the soul of the nation, has now begun its historical journey toward the higher peak of the "common cultural heritage of mankind." On January 17, a signboard hanging ceremony for the "KOREA Taekwondo UNESCO Promotion Team (Director Choi Jae-chun)" was held at the Muju Taekwondo Center in Jeollabuk-do to officially recognize the global value of Taekwondo.

■ Taekwondo's Symbols Back 55 Years
The handwriting of the late President Park Chung-hee who stepped on his homeland for the first time in 55 years received the most attention at the signboard hanging ceremony. The pen name is a rare artifact containing the spirit of the time when taekwondo was advocated as a "national sports" in the 1970s.

The title, which had been cherished by a pastor in the United States, was returned by the donor's sublime determination that "the true copy of national taekwondo should remain a historical public good, not an individual possession." The donation, which was made by Baek Hwang-ki 9 dan in San Diego and Choi Tae-ho, president of Muju-gucheon-dong Senior Citizens' Association, served as a bridge, gave Taekwondo people who attended the signboard ceremony a deep thrill that "History awakens itself and helps to register."

■ The Miracle of No Budget, created by the pure passion of the private sector
The launch of the promotion team is more special because it was made only with the voluntary dedication of Taekwondo people, without separate budget support from the government or local governments. Choi Jae-chun, the head of the promotion team, and other members took care of the entire process, from preparation for the event to donation of Hui-ho.

Choi Jae-chun said in his greeting, "Taegwon is the body philosophy and essence of manners of the Korean people that have existed for thousands of years beyond just sports. Today's signboard hanging ceremony is a practical starting point for sharing this great spiritual heritage with people around the world." This is an expression of his strong will to prove the cultural value of Taekwondo to the world.

■ Taekwondo's Future Opens Amid national sports
At the site, a large number of people from the taekwondo community and political and related parties, including Yoon Woong-seok, head of the Kukkiwon, Kim Joong-heon, chairman of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, and Hwang In-hong, governor of Muju County, attended to strengthen the registration. In addition, Kim Kwan-young, governor of Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, and Heo Min, head of the National Heritage Administration, helped by promising support and cooperation at the national level through video congratulatory remarks.

대한민국을 상징하는 무예이자 민족의 혼이 담긴 태권도가 이제 ‘인류 공동의 문화유산’이라는 더 높은 정점을 향해 역사적 행보를 시작했다. 지난 1월 17일, 전북 무주 태권도원에서는 태권도의 세계적 가치를 공식적으로 인정받기 위한 ‘KOREA 태권도 유네스코 추진단(단장 최재춘)’의 현판식이 성황리에 개최되었다.

이번 현판식에서 가장 큰 주목을 받은 것은 55년 만에 고국 땅을 밟은 고(故) 박정희 대통령의 친필 휘호였다. 이 휘호는 1970년대 태권도가 ‘국기(國技)’로 제창되던 당시의 시대 정신을 담고 있는 희귀 유물이다.

미국의 한 목회자가 소중히 보관해오던 이 휘호는 “국기 태권도의 진본은 개인의 소유가 아닌, 역사적 공공재로 남아야 한다”는 기증자의 숭고한 결단에 의해 귀환이 성사되었다. 미국 샌디에이고의 백황기 9단과 최태호 무주구천동 노인회장이 가교 역할을 하며 성사된 이번 기증은, 현판식에 참석한 태권도인들에게 “역사가 스스로 깨어나 등재를 돕고 있다”는 깊은 전율을 선사했다.

이번 추진단의 출범이 더욱 특별한 이유는 정부나 지자체의 별도 예산 지원 없이, 오직 태권도인들의 자발적인 헌신으로 이루어졌다는 점이다. 최재춘 추진단장을 비롯한 단원들은 사비와 시간을 아끼지 않으며 행사 준비부터 휘호 기증 절차까지 모든 과정을 직접 도맡았다.

최재춘 단장은 인사말을 통해 “태권도는 단순한 스포츠 종목을 넘어 수천 년간 이어져 온 한민족의 몸 철학이자 예의의 정수”라며, “오늘의 현판식은 이 위대한 정신 유산을 세계인과 공유하기 위한 실질적인 출발점”이라고 강조했다. 이는 태권도가 지닌 문화적 가치를 세계에 증명하겠다는 강한 의지의 표명이다.

현장에는 윤웅석 국기원장, 김중헌 태권도진흥재단 이사장, 황인홍 무주군수 등 태권도계와 정·관계 인사들이 대거 참석해 등재 추진에 힘을 실었다. 또한 김관영 전북특별자치도지사와 허민 국가유산청장 등은 영상 축사를 통해 국가적 차원의 지지와 협력을 약속하며 힘을 보탰다.

정순천 부단장의 개회 선언으로 시작된 제막식에서 ‘KOREA 태권도 유네스코 추진단’의 현판이 모습을 드러내는 순간, 장내는 뜨거운 박수로 가득 찼다. 이는 단순한 조직의 탄생을 넘어 태권도가 세계 문화사의 주역으로 당당히 서겠다는 선언과도 같았다.

추진단은 이번 현판식을 기점으로 태권도의 유네스코 인류무형문화유산 등재를 위한 본격적인 활동에 돌입한다. 주요 과제로는
