Asian Taekwondo Union(ATU) to Open Office at Taekwondo won in Muju-County

On the 23rd, at the Taekwondo Center, Kim Sang-jin, president of the Asian Taekwondo Union(ATU), Kim Jung-heon, chairman of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, Lim Seon-jeong, director of sports policy at Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, Hwang In-hong, governor of Muju County, and Lee Byung-ha, chairman of the World Taekwondo Culture Expo Organizing Committee, attended the opening ceremony of the Asian Taekwondo Federation with 44 member countries.

Kim Sang-jin, president of the Asian Taekwondo Union(ATU), recently announced a new leap forward in Asian Taekwondo, moving the federation's headquarters from Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province to the National Taekwondo Center in Muju, North Jeolla Province. As of January 2026, the relocation is considered a strategic decision for the federation's sustainable growth beyond a simple change in office space.

The relocation of the Asian Taekwondo Union(ATU) to Taekwondo Center is the foundation for maximizing the use of the "integration of administration and field" infrastructure, and the Taekwondo Center is the world's only taekwondo-specialized space with stadiums, training grounds, accommodation facilities, and museums to increase efficiency by operating administrative functions, practical education and training in one place.

President Kim's move can be seen as the beginning of the Asian Taekwondo Federation's aspiration for the sustainable growth of the global taekwondo culture based on the power of the continent, where Asian Taekwondo is concentrated at 60 percent of the world's population.

Therefore, Kim's idea is to solidify his international status by establishing a headquarters representing 44 Asian member states in Muju, a sacred place for taekwondo.

Recently, the Taekwondo Institute expects that the Asian Taekwondo Union and KOREATaekwondoUNESCO Promotion Team will move into the Taekwondo Institute, which will greatly contribute to the increased utilization of the Taekwondo Institute, the central training center of the World Taekwondo Federation, and the development of Taekwondo in Asia. In addition, it is expected that it will have positive effects such as consultation and response in the process of promoting UNESCO Intangible Heritage Listing, which is being worked together by the National Heritage Administration, the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, the Kukkiwon, and the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province.

Meanwhile, the Taekwondo Center is also planning to use it as a mecca for Asian member countries to hold off-season training and international competitions. It is to strengthen programs linked to the government's ODA (Public Development Assistance) project to support projects in underdeveloped countries and to revitalize Taekwondo for the disabled.

23일, 태권도원에서는 김상진 아시아태권도연맹 (ATU)회장, 김중헌 태권도진흥재단 이사장과, 임선정 전북특별자치도 체육정책과장, 황인홍 무주군수, 이병하 세계태권도문화엑스포조직위원장 등이 참석한 가운데 44개국의 회원국을 가진 ‘아시아태권도연맹 사무실 개소식’과 ‘현판 제막식’을 가지며 태권도원은 지속적 성장가능한 아시아 태권도의 중심축으로서의 함께 하기로 했다.

김상진 아시아태권도연맹(ATU) 회장은 최근 연맹 본부를 경기도 성남에서 전북 무주 국립태권도원으로 이전하며, 아시아 태권도의 새로운 도약을 선언했다. 2026년 1월 현재, 이 이전은 단순한 사무 공간의 변화를 넘어 연맹의 지속적인  성장가능을 위한 전략적 결단으로 평가받고 있습니다.

아시아태권도연맹(ATU)의 태권도원 이전은 "행정과 현장의 통합" 인프라 활용 극대화의 기반구축으로 자리맥김 하여 태권도원은 경기장, 훈련장, 숙박시설, 박물관을 모두 갖춘 세계 유일의 태권도 특화 공간으로서 행정 기능과 실무 교육·훈련을 한곳에서 운영하여 효율성을 높이기 위함이다.

김 회장의 이러한 행보는 아시아 태권도가 전 세계 인구 60%가 집중된 대륙의 힘을 바탕으로 아시아태권도연맹이 글로벌 태권도 문화가 지속적인  성장 가능한 대한 포부의 시작이라 볼 수 있다.

따라서 김 회장의 이러한 구상은 태권도의 성지인 무주에 아시아 44개 회원국을 대표하는 본부를 둠으로써 국제적 위상을 공고히 하고자 한다는 것이다.

최근 태권도원은 아시아태권도연맹과 KOREA태권도유네스코추진단이 태권도원에 입주해 세계태권도연맹 중앙훈련센터인 태권도원의 활용도 증대와 아시아 태권도 발전에 크게 기여할 것으로 기대하고 있다. 이와 더불어 국가유산청, 태권도진흥재단, 국기원, 전북특별자치도 등이 함께 노력하고 있는 ‘유네스코 인류무형유산 등재’ 추진 과정에서도 협의와 대응 등 긍정적 작용을 할 것으로 보고 있다.

한편, 태권도원은 아시아 회원국들의 전지훈련 및 국제대회 개최의 메카로 활용할 계획이다. 저개발국 지원 사업 및 장애인 태권도 활성화를 위해 정부의 ODA(공적개발원조) 사업과 연계한 프로그램을 강화한다는 것이다.
