The Connecting Dots in Taekwondo

 I would like to talk to Taekwondo people who are tired of prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. I hope you believe that what you are doing now will surely be connected in the future. This is not just a good word to comfort you. This is what Steve Jobs experienced, and emphasized in his speech.

The expression 'Connecting the Dots' appeared in Steve Jobs' speech at the graduation ceremony at Stanford University. This means that in our lives, experiences that were previously thought to be irrelevant are all connected in the future. It was not known in the past, but in the future, certain events are clearly connected as dots in life. We just couldn't figure out what it was until the dots appeared connected.

Steve Jobs dropped out of college, where he attended for six months because he didn't have a college tuition fee, and took a 'Calligraphy' class as a listener. Since he was a special student of the class, he didn't know at the time that this class, which he had taken with curiosity, would become a special dot in his future. But ten years later, while designing a Macintosh computer, Steve Jobs was able to take advantage of the experience of the class he took before for making great typography on his computer. And the experience was reborn as it was connected to the dots of making beautiful fonts for the computers we use now.

If Steve Jobs hadn't accidentally taken the class, this fancy typography wouldn't have existed on a personal computer. In the future, the college class that he took as a listener was connected to some dots, creating a line and appearing as a nice picture. If so, what dots are we puting today?

Small dots gather to form a line, and a picture is made from the lines. The trivial and seemingly meaningless things we do now will become some connected dots in the future and give us some meaning to live our lives. Even though every single dot you are puting now seems meaningless at this moment, imagine that in your future the dot will connect with each other and finally appear as a great picture, how wonderful it is.

I sometimes think that some of the things I do are meaningless and just wasting my time. However, no one will know what points this single dot will lead to in my future. When I was a high school Taekwondo gyeorugi player, I spent hard training and tired daily routine. I often felt that this period did not give me any further progress and brilliant results. But what made me now was the result of connecting the dots I took one by one at that time.

As Steve Jobs said, no one knows how the dots we put while doing things will affect our future later. After a while, the dots will eventually appear connected in some form. Do not be in a hurry, let's do our works silently today. I believe that one kick that seems to be repeated without meaning, a handful of punches that seem to be reaching into the air, and one class that you listen to with doubts about the necessity will surely connect with something as dots in the future and create a perfect me.

Therefore, even today I am trying to study and practice Taekwondo. I hope that today's dots will be connected by some line and completed into a wonderful picture in the coming future. With that kind of mind, I put a dot of Taekwondo now. Believe that the many dots you are puting today will surely become some connected lines and pictures in the future. Don't forget that these dots are the dots that will surely form you.

태권도로 연결되는 점(Dot)

장기화된 코로나에 지친 태권도인들에게 필자는 이야기하고 싶다. 여러분이 지금 하고 있는 일들은 분명 미래에 연결될 것이란 걸 믿길 바란다. 이는 그냥 듣기 좋은 얘기가 아니다. 스티브 잡스가 경험하였던 일이고 그러하기에 연설에서도 강조한 말이다. 

'Connecting the Dots‘ (점들의 연결)이라는 말은 스티브 잡스가 스탠포드(Stanford) 대학교 졸업식에서 연설한 내용 중 등장한 말이다. 이는 우리가 살다 보면 예전엔 무관하다고 생각했던 경험들이 훗날 모두 연결되어 있다는 의미이다. 과거에는 알 수 없지만 미래에는 점들이 분명 연결되어 나타난다. 다만 그 점들이 연결되어 나타날 때까지는 우리는 알 수 없을 뿐이다.

스티브 잡스는 6개월간 다닌 대학을 등록금이 없어 그만 두고서 청강생으로 ‘캘리그래피(Calligraphy-글자를 아름답게 쓰는 기술)’수업을 들었다. 그는 청강생 신분이었기에 호기심으로 들었던 이 수업이 먼 훗날 어떤 점이 되어 연결될 줄은 그 당시에는 몰랐다. 하지만 10년 후 스티브 잡스는 매킨토시 컴퓨터를 디자인할 때 우연히 들었던 그 수업의 경험이 컴퓨터에 멋진 타이포그래피(Typography-활자 서체의 배열)를 담을 수 있게 하였다. 그리고 지금 우리가 사용하고 있는 컴퓨터의 아름다운 글씨체를 만드는 점으로 연결되어 탄생하게 되었던 것이다.

만약 스티브 잡스가 우연히 그 수업을 듣지 않았더라면, 개인용 컴퓨터는 아마 멋진 타이포그래피를 가지지 못했을 것이다. 청강으로 들었던 수업의 점이 훗날에 점들의 연결로 인해 선을 긋고 그림을 그린 것이다. 우리는 오늘 어떠한 점을 찍고 있는가?

작은 점들이 모여 하나의 선이 되고 그 선들로 인해 그림을 그릴 수 있다. 지금 우리가 하는 사소하고 의미 없어 보이는 일들이 미래에 연결된 힘으로 다시 살아가는데 의미를 부여하게 될 것이다. 비록 지금 찍고 있는 점 하나하나가 무의미해 보이더라도 나의 미래에 서로 연결되어 나타나 멋진 그림으로 채워질 것을 상상한다면 이 얼마나 멋진 일인가.

나는 가끔은 내가 하는 일들 중에 의미 없고 시간낭비라 생각되는 일들이 더러 있다. 하지만 이러한 하나의 점이 나의 미래에 어떠한 점들로 연결이 될지는 아무도 모르는 일이다. 고등학교 태권도 겨루기 선수시절에 매일매일 반복되어지는 고된 훈련과 일상이 더 이상의 발전도 화려한 결과물도 없는 시기인 듯 느껴질 때가 많았다. 하지만 지금의 나를 있게 만든 건 그때 내가 하나하나 찍었던 점들이 연결되었기에 만든 결과물이 분명하다.

스티브 잡스가 말했듯이, 우리가 어떠한 일을 하면서 찍는 점들이 우리 미래에 어떤 영향을 미칠지는 아무도 모른다. 한참이 지나야 그 점들이 결국 연결되는 것이다. 조급해하지 말고 묵묵히 오늘도 나의 일을 하자. 의미 없이 반복되는 것 같은 발차기 하나, 마치 허공을 향해 지르는 듯한 주먹지르기 한 줌, 그리고 필요성에 의구심을 품고 듣는 수업 하나가 미래에 반드시 연결되어 완성된 나를 만들어 낸다는 것을 믿는다.

그러하기에 오늘도 나는 태권도를 공부하고 실천하려 노력한다. 나의 다가올 미래에 오늘의 점들이 연결되어 멋진 그림이 완성되길 바라는 마음으로 태권도의 점을 찍는다. 여러분들이 오늘 찍고 있는 여러 개의 점들 중에 미래에 분명 연결된 선과 그림이 되어 다가올 것을 믿으면 된다. 그 점들(Dots)은 반드시 여러분을 성장시키는 점들임을 잊지 않길 바란다.
