The World Taekwondo Peace Festival was held in Seoul, Korea on November 22, 2021 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Olympic Taekwondo and the 40th anniversary of the UN International Day of Peace.
The event, which took place at the Seosomun Shrine History Museum, was jointly promoted by World Taekwondo (WT), GCS International and the U.N. Association of the Republic of Korea.
The peace festival, which lasted about 2 hours, featured a 20-minute Taekwondo performance by the WT Demonstration Team, an opening ceremony, and a one-hour peace concert.
The WT Demonstration Team showed the world that Taekwondo is for peace as they competed in the preliminary round of the ‘America’s Got Talent’ in April this year to receive a golden buzzer to reach up to the final round in September.
Shortly after the performance, there was an opening ceremony, in which WT President Choue delivered an opening speech, followed by congratulatory remarks by Vice Sport Minister Kim Jung -bae, former U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, U.N. Association-Korea President Lee Ho-jin. IOC President Thomas Bach also gave a congratulatory video message for the participants.
WT President Choue said in his opening remarks, “Since 2000, Taekwondo has featured in six consecutive Olympic Games. Throughout the past 21 years, Taekwondo has not only brought excitement to fans around the world; Taekwondo has also created a pathway for refugees, displaced persons, and the underprivileged to fulfil their sporting dreams. In Tokyo, we had four Taekwondo refugee athletes competing for the very first time in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
Dr. Choue, who also serves as president GCS International since 2006, continued to say, “Taekwondo is a sport that gives hope to those who dream of being champions. In total, we have 41 countries that have medaled in Taekwondo at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, making it one of the fairest sports in terms of medal distribution.”
“My philosophy, which was passed down from my late father, Dr. Choue Young Seek, who was the inspiration behind the creation of the U.N. International Day of Peace, is that ‘Peace is More Precious than triumph,” he said. “I sometimes wish that there is no such things as an U.N. International Day of Peace, because we should all live in a peaceful world every day. Unfortunately, there is no such utopian world. Therefore, the commemoration of the 40th U.N. International Day of Peace this year is a reminder that we, as global leaders, have a role to play in nurturing generations to live in harmony and respect. In a world of peace.”
Former U.N. Secretary General Ban said in his congratulatory speech, “I remember Dr. Young Seek Choue fondly as a man of vision and insight. At that time, I was serving as director for the U.N. Affairs Division of the Foreign Ministry and involved in the process of proclaiming International Peace Day. Looking back, it was Dr. Choue who initiated the very idea of International Day of Peace.” “Through close cooperation with then-Costa Rican President Rodrigo Carazo Odio, the U.N. General Assembly adopted its landmark resolution in 1981 to designate every Tuesday of September as the International Day of Peace, which was changed to September 21. Since Korea was not a yet a full U.N. member state, Dr. Young Seek Choue’s role was to work behind the scenes by persuading President Carazo Odio of his idea.”
In his congratulatory video message, IOC President Bach said, “Today’s festival is more than celebrating the long history of Taekwondo as an Olympic sport. Today you are putting the spotlight on the unique power of sport to unite the entire world in peace.” “Peace, this was also central to the thinking of the founder of the IOC, Pierre de Coubertin. When he revived the Olympic Games 127 years ago, he saw them as a way to promote peace among nations and peoples,” the IOC President said. “This is why I would like to thank World Taekwondo under the great leadership of your president Choue for organizing this festival that celebrates sport, peace and solidarity.”
The peace concert featured eight songs. Mezzo-soprano Paik Nam-ok performed “Song of Peace,” Then the Korean Soul, a famous Korean black gospel group, performed “Oh Happy Day,” followed by “Yo Soy Maria” by the Jazz Quartet. Band Leenalchi, a seven-member band, performed “Tiger is Coming” and “Please Don’t Go.” The Korean Adopted Children Choir performed “Magnolia Blossom,” which was written by GCS founder Young Seek Choue and composed by Kim Dong-jin, and John Lennon’s “Imagine.”
세계태권도연맹(WT, 총재 조정원)은 태권도 올림픽 정식종목 참가 20주년 및 유엔 ‘세계평화의 날’ 제정 40주년을 기념하는 ‘세계태권도평화축제’가 11월 22일 서울 서소문성지 역사박물관에서 개최되었다.
코로나로 제한된 인원만 초청된 이번 행사에는 김정배 문화체육관광부 제2차관, 반기문 전 유엔사무총장, 이시종 충북지사, 황인홍 무주군수 그리고 이호진 유엔한국협회 회장 대행 등이 첨석했다.
태권도계에서는 이대순 전 WT부총재, 전갑길 국기원 이사장, 양진방 대한태권도협회장, 오응환 태권도진흥재단 이사장, 박양우 WT 부총재, 정국현 WT 집행위원 등이 자리를 함께했다.
언론계에서는 승명호 한국일보 회장, 정희택 세계일보 사장, 오영진 코리아 타임즈 사장이 참석했다.
그리고 역대 하계올림픽과 패럴림픽 태권도 경기에서 최소 한 개 이상의 메달을 가져간 41개국가 소속 주한 외교 사절단 중에서 아제르바이잔, 멕시코, 페루, 크로아티아, 케냐대사 등 20여명이 참석해 자리를 빛내 줬다.
오후 5시부터 약 2시간 가량 진행된 세계태권도평화축제는 WT시범단의 태권도 공연을 시작으로, 공식 기념식 그리고 1시간 가량의 음악회로 이어졌다.
WT시범단은 지난 4월 미국 NBC의 인기 예능 프로그램인 ‘아메리카 갓 탤런트’ 예선전에 출전하여 골든 버저를 받아 8강전에 직행한 후, 지난 9월 결승전에 진출하는 등 태권도가 평화를 추구하는 글로벌 스포츠라는 인식을 전 세계인에게 잘 심어주었다.
갑자기 추워진 날씨에도 불구하고 가족과 함께 참석한 주한 대사들은 야외에서 열린 WT 시범단의 화려하고 현란한 공중 격파에 열렬한 박수와 뜨거운 함성을 보냈다.
WT 시범단의 공연 직후 실내로 옮겨 열린 기념식은 조정원 WT총재의 개회사, 김정배 문화체육관광부 차관의 축사, 반기문 전 유엔사무총장의 축사, 이호진 유엔한국협회 회장 대행의 축사, 그리고 마지막으로 토마스 바흐 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 위원장의 영상 축하 메시지로 진행됐다.
조정원 WT총재는 기념식에서 “태권도는 지난 2000년 시드니올림픽부터 도쿄까지 6번 연속 올림픽 정식종목으로 참가해 전 세계 팬들에게 경기의 감동과 흥분을 주었을 뿐만 아니라, 난민 등 소외계층 아이와 청소년에게 올림픽에서 메달을 딸 수 있다는 꿈과 희망을 주었다. 또한 41개 나라로 메달이 분포돼 가장 공정한 스포츠에 속한다”며 “유엔 세계평화의 날 제정에 크게 기여한 선친 조영식 박사로부터 전해 내려온 ‘평화는 개선보다 귀하다’는 인생 철학이 평화로운 세상에서 화합과 존중의 마음을 가지고 살아가도록 중요한 역할을 할 것을 상기시켜 준다”고 개회사를 전했다.
김정배 문체부 차관은 “전세계 태권도인구가 1억명을 돌파한지 오래이고 외신에서는 K팝 이전에 한국 가장 성공한 한국문화라고 평가했다”며 태권도가 올림픽에서 영구히 정식종목으로 남기위해 정부가 함께 노력하겠다고 말했다.
반기문 전 유엔사무총장은 축사에서 “1981년 세계대학총장회 의장을 맡고 있었던 조영식 박사는 로드리고 카라소 오디오(Rodrigo Carazo Odio) 당시 코스타리카 대통령과 긴밀한 협조를 통해 1981년 유엔총회에서 만장일치로 통과되어 매 9월 셋째 화요일을 (나중에 9월 21일로 변경된) 세계평화의 날로 지정하게 된 것이다”며 “당시 한국은 유엔 정 회원국이 아니어서 조영식 박사가 막후에서 결정적인 역할을 했다”라고 말했다.
이호진 유엔한국협회 회장 대행은 “40년 전 냉전이 극에 달했을 때 UN총회에서 세계평화의 날 제정 결의안이 만장일치로 채택된 이 소중한 역사를 기억하자”고 말했다.
토마스바흐 IOC위원장은 “오늘이축제는올림픽종목으로서태권도의오랜역사를축하하는이상의의미를지니고있다. 평화는피에르쿠베르탱국제올림픽위원회창시자의중심사상이기도했다”며 “평화의미션이올림픽경기의핵심으로단결이없이는평화가없다. 스포츠,평화그리고단결을축하하는오늘이평화축제를주최하는조정원 WT 총재의큰지도력에감사를보낸다”고영상축사를보냈다.
1시간 가량 진행된 평화음악회에서는 백남옥 메조소프라노가 ‘평화의 노래’를 열창하고 재즈사중주의 ‘요 소이 마리아’ (나는 마리아이다)의 연주와 그룹 ‘이날치’ 밴드의 ‘범 내려온다’ 공연이 열렸다.
이어서 ‘한국입양어린이합창단’의 ‘목련화’와 모든 출연자들이 존 레논의 ‘이매진’ 합창을 끝으로 연주회의 막이 내렸다.
