World Taekwondo today officially recognised Athletica Vatican – Vatican Taekwondo with the city state becoming the 211th member of the International Federation.
Athletica Vatican – Vatican Taekwondo was approved as the latest member of the Taekwondo family via an electronic vote of the World Taekwondo General Assembly. World Taekwondo is only one of two International Federations with a Vatican sport entity among its membership.
World Taekwondo has developed a close relationship with the Vatican in recent years through their shared commitment to promoting peace. The World Taekwondo Demonstration Team first performed in Vatican City in 2016 during the 1st Global Conference on Faith & Sport. In 2017, World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue and the President of the Federazione Italiana Taekwondo (FITA) Angelo Cito were received by Pope Francis in Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican City and President Choue presented His Holiness with an honorary 10th dan black belt. The following year, World Taekwondo performed an historic demonstration in St Peter’s Square in front of the Pope Francis and thousands of people gathered from all over the world for the Pope’s General Audience.
World Taekwondo President Choue said:
“We are delighted to welcome Athletica Vatican – Vatican Taekwondo to our global Taekwondo family. Taekwondo is a universal language, it does not matter what your religion or beliefs are; where you are from, or who you are; we are all united through Taekwondo. With the Vatican, World Taekwondo shares many common values and we believe strongly in the power of sport to promote respect, friendship and peace. I am sure the creation of this new MNA will help further strengthen Taekwondo and its values around the world.”
Taekwondo courses have already been running in the Vatican with FITA having partnered with Saint Pius X Institute to organize a Taekwondo course for the students of the seminary at the end of 2020. The course saw 20 boys aged between 13- and 17-years old practice Taekwondo three times a week as part of their curriculum.
Undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture Msgr. Melchor Sanchez de Toca said:
“By introducing Athletica Vaticana into the greater family of World Taekwondo, I hope we will be able to help others to connect the high ethical values of Taekwondo to a robust spiritual life, and strengthen the bridge between eastern and western cultural traditions. Together we can contribute to the common good of society, by spreading moral and physical strength, self-discipline, overcoming one’s limits, respect for others and joy of life, which are characteristics of Taekwondo.”
Giampaolo Mattei President of Athletica Vatican – Vatican Taekwondo added:
“Such recognition aims at encouraging the practice of Taekwondo as a sport among children and adults with a strong focus on inclusion of people with impairments and solidarity.”
세계태권도연맹(WT)은 11월 16일부터 22일까지 개최된 WT 총회 전자 투표를 통해 바티칸 시국을 회원국으로 공식 승인했다.
지암파올로 마테이(Giampaolo Mattei) 바티칸 체육협회장(Athletica Vaticana - Vatican Taekwondo)은 지난 10월 회원국 가입을 위한 공식 서신을 WT로 보내왔다. 이에 따라 회원국 가입에 필요한 서류 절차를 거쳐 총회의 정식 승인을 통과해 WT의 211번째 회원국이 된 것이다.
바티칸 체육협회는 2019년 설립되고 공인된 교황청의 공식 스포츠 법인이다.
몇 해 전부터 바티칸과 긴밀한 관계를 맺어온 조정원 WT 총재는 교황청 문화평의회 산체스 몬시뇰 의장과 바티칸에 WT태권도협회 개설을 위한 교류를 여러 차례 이어오다 마침내 결실이 이루어졌다.
조총재는 2017년 바티칸에서 프란치스코 교황을 만나 명예 10단증과 함께 태권도 도복과 띠를 전달했으며, 2018년 WT 시범단은 교황청의 초청으로 교황이 직접 주재하는 수요미사회가 열리는 성 베드로 광장에서 전 세계 1만명이 넘는 신도와 관광객 앞에서 역사적인 평화 시범을 선보인 바 있다.
이보다 앞서 2016년 교황청에서 ‘인류를 위해 봉사하는 스포츠(Sport at the Service of Humanity)’라는 주제로 처음 열린 ‘신앙과 스포츠에 관한 국제 컨퍼런스(The First Global Conference on Faith & Sport)’ 개회식에서, WT시범단이 태권도 공연을 펼쳐 참석한 주요 국제 인사들의 박수갈채를 받았다.
또한, 바티칸의 ‘성 비오 10세 소 신학교 (Saint Pius X Institute)’는 이태리태권도협회와 협약을 맺고 2020년 10월부터 사제 교육을 받는 학생들에게 태권도 수업을 진행하고 있다.
조 총재는 "바티칸의 WT 회원국 가입을 환영한다. 태권도는 종교나 신념, 나이, 성별을 구별하지 않고 태권도를 통해 하나가 된다”며 “바티칸과 함께 WT는 많은 공통의 가치를 공유하고 있으며, 평화를 지향하는 스포츠의 힘을 강화하는데 더욱 도움이 될 것이라고” 말했다.
교황청 몬시뇰 의장은 바티칸의 WT 회원가입을 위한 지지 서신을 조정원 총재에게 보내 "태권도의 가치인 타인에 대한 존중, 자기 수양, 한계 극복 등을 바티칸과 함께 전파함으로써 사회 공익에 기여할 수 있기를 바란다”고 전했다.
바티칸이 회원국으로 등록한 국제스포츠연맹은 사이클에 이어 태권도가 두 번째다.
