The Asia Taekwondo Union (ATU) announced a new leap forward. On September 3rd, at 5:00 PM, a grand inauguration ceremony for 10th new President Kim Sang-jin was held at the Muju Taekwondowon Ilyeoheon, the mecca of Korean taekwondo. Approximately 150 people, including prominent figures from the taekwondo community, regional figures, and political figures, attended the event, making it a meaningful occasion to pledge together for the future of Asian taekwondo.
Kim Sang-jin, the new president, was elected on August 29th, defeating Yang Jin-bang at the 10th presidential election held in Kuching, Malaysia. He garnered significant support during the election campaign for his pledges to ensure transparent and fair administration, operate the federation with a focus on member countries, and promote sustainable taekwondo development.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by former ATU President Lee Kyu-seok, Kukkiwon President Lee Dong-seop, Korea Taekwondo Association President Yang Jin-bang, Muju County Mayor Hwang In-hong, WT Executive Committee Member Jeong Kook-hyun, World Olympic Taekwondo Federation Chairman Moon Dae-sung, Indonesian Taekwondo Association executives, Asia Taekwondo Union Secretary General Kim Ha-young, Asia Federation Executive Committee Member Lee Kyung-bae, Taekwondo Promotion Foundation Chairman Kim Jung-heon, former Kukkiwon Training Center Director Yoon Woong-seok, former Kukkiwon Demonstration Team Director Nam Seung-hyun, former Korea National Sport University President Ahn Yong-gyu, Kim Un-yong Sports Committee Chairman Choi Jae-chun, ATU executives, and prominent figures in the domestic and international taekwondo community.
In his inaugural address, Chairman Kim Sang-jin emphasized, “I am delighted to join my colleagues in creating a new history for Asian Taekwondo. I will do my best to work with the new executive team to ensure that Asian Taekwondo becomes a leading force in world Taekwondo.”
He also expressed his commitment, saying, “Through Taekwondo, we will contribute to the peace and harmony of humanity and lay the foundation for sustainable development for future generations.”
Kukkiwon President Lee Dong-seop: “As the home of Taekwondo, Kukkiwon will actively cooperate to strengthen the status of Asian Taekwondo.”
Taekwondo Promotion Foundation Chairman Kim Jung-heon: “We welcome the new beginning at Taekwondowon, and the foundation will contribute to its development alongside the ATU.”
Korea Taekwondo Association President Yang Jin-bang: “I believe that Asian Taekwondo will further develop through Chairman Kim Sang-jin’s leadership and international network.”
National Assembly Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee Chairman Kim Kyo-heung: “We will spare no effort in supporting Taekwondo so that it can shine as a global heritage encompassing both culture and sports.”
Kim Kwan-young, Governor of North Jeolla Province: "I welcome the relocation to Muju and will work with the Asian Federation to strengthen its position as the center of world taekwondo."
The new executive team outlined key tasks: expanding the base of taekwondo, strengthening education and research infrastructure, digital transformation and content development, promoting an inclusive taekwondo culture, strengthening organizational operations and financial foundations, and expanding international solidarity.
With this inauguration, the Asian Taekwondo Federation is determined to establish itself as a global hub for taekwondo by promoting technological advancements and expanding exchanges among member countries and enhancing its international standing.
During the inauguration ceremony, former President Lee Kyu-seok was appointed Honorary President and presented with a 10-don gold plaque of appreciation. A ceremony was also held to present the new executive team with their certificates of appointment and a business agreement with the Korea Visual Sports Association.
Meanwhile, the ATU Secretariat, previously located in Seongnam, will also relocate to the Taekwondowon.

아시아태권도연맹(ATU)이 새로운 도약을 알렸다. 9월 3일 오후 5시, 대한민국 태권도의 성지 무주 태권도원 일여헌에서 김상진 신임 회장의 취임식이 성대하게 열렸다. 이번 행사는 태권도계 주요 인사들과 지역 및 정치권 인사 등 150 여명이 대거 참석해 아시아 태권도의 미래를 함께 다짐하는 뜻깊은 자리였다.
김상진 신임 회장은 지난 8월 29일 말레이시아 쿠칭에서 열린 제10대 회장에서 양진방 후보를 누루고 선출됐다. 그는 선거 과정에서 ▲투명하고 공정한 행정 ▲회원국 중심의 연맹 운영 ▲지속 가능한 태권도 발전을 공약으로 내세워 큰 호응을 얻었다.
이날 취임식에는 이규석 전 ATU 회장, 국기원 이동섭 원장, 대한태권도협회 양진방 회장, 황인홍 무주 군수, 정국현 WT 집행위원, 문대성 세계올림픽태권도연맹 이사장, 인도네시아 태권도협회 임원단, 김하영 아시아태권도연맹 사무총장, 이경배 아시아연맹 집행위원, 태권도진흥재단 김중헌 이사장 , 윤웅석 전 국기원 연수원장, 남승현 전 국기원시범단장, 안용규 전 한국체육대학교 총장, 최재춘 김운용스포츠위원회 위원장, ATU임원단 그리고 국내외 태권도계 명인 등이 대거 참석했다.
김상진 회장은 취임사에서 “아시아 태권도의 새로운 역사를 함께 만들어갈 동료들과 함께하게 되어 기쁘다”면서 “신임 집행부와 힘을 합쳐 아시아 태권도가 세계 태권도를 선도하는 중심축이 될 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 강조했다.
그는 또 “태권도를 통해 인류의 평화와 화합에 기여하고, 미래 세대를 위한 지속가능한 발전 기반을 마련하겠다”며 의지를 밝혔다.
이동섭 국기원 원장: “태권도의 본산인 국기원도 아시아 태권도의 위상 강화를 위해 적극 협력하겠다.”
김중헌 태권도진흥재단 이사장: “태권도원에서의 새로운 출발을 환영하며, 재단도 ATU와 함께 발전에 기여하겠다.”
양진방 대한태권도협회 회장: “김상진 회장의 리더십과 국제적 네트워크를 통해 아시아 태권도가 더욱 발전할 것이라 믿는다.”
김교흥 국회 문화체육관광위원장: “태권도가 문화와 스포츠를 아우르는 글로벌 유산으로서 빛날 수 있도록 지원을 아끼지 않겠다.”
김관영 전북특별자치도지사: “무주 이전을 환영하며, 세계 태권도의 중심으로서 아시아연맹과 함께 위상 강화를 위해 노력하겠다.”
신임 집행부는 ▲태권도 저변 확대 ▲교육·연구 인프라 강화 ▲디지털 전환과 콘텐츠 개발 ▲포용적 태권도 문화 확산 ▲조직 운영과 재정 기반 강화 ▲국제 연대 확대 등을 핵심 과제로 제시했다.
이번 취임을 계기로 아시아태권도연맹은 기술 발전과 회원국 간 교류를 확대하고, 국제적 위상 강화를 통해 글로벌 태권도 중심축으로 자리매김하겠다는 각오다.
이날 취임식중에 전 이규석 회장을 명예회장으로 추대하며 순금 10돈의 감사패를 증정하고 새 집행부의 임명장 수여식과 대한비주얼스포츠협회와 업무협약식도 가졌다.
한편 성남에 위치했던 ATU사무국도 태권도원으로 이전한다.
